Overview

A hedge trimmer, shrub trimmer, or bush trimmer is a gardening tool or machine used for trimming (cutting, pruning) hedges or solitary shrubs (bushes). They can be used to clean up overgrown hedges or to creating elaborate shaped designs to wow your neighbors. Today we will be reviewing the best electric hedge trimmers on the market in 2021 and answering some frequently asked questions.

Hedge trimmers can be either manual or powered. Powered trimmers can be either electric or gasoline powered. Gasoline powered units are usually heavier and more powerful than their electric relatives.

Electric hedge trimmers are a great option for the DIYer because it removes the physical burden of a manual trimmer but still represents a more eco-friendly tool than gas powered options.

Best Electric Hedge Trimmers with Reviews

WORX WG261.9 Cordless Hedge Trimmer (Best Value)

The first product on our list is the WORX WG261.9 Cordless Hedge Trimmer. We found this product to be the best value choice out of the electric hedge trimmers we reviewed on the list.

The WORX WG261.9 Cordless Hedge Trimmer features a D-Grip Front Handle which adds to its ergonomic value. As a result, we found the electric trimmer to be very comfortable during use. The D-Grip also allows the user to easily manipulate the trimmer to get the desired shaping on various types of hedges.

At just 5.5 pounds, the WORX WG261.9 is lightweight, which compounds the benefits of the D-Grip handle.

With a cutting length of 22 inches and a max cutting diameter of ¾ in, you should be able to handle most smaller jobs. The dual action blades, which move back and forth, cut through hedges seamlessly, reducing vibration felt by user.

To round out the positives, the product comes with a 3 year warranty, which is on the longer side. This gives the user confidence that the product will be around for a long time and speaks to the manufacturing quality.

Offsetting the above, we didn’t necessarily like the fact the base model has the battery sold separately. If you use other WORX products, some batteries are interchangeable, but if you don’t, this represents an additional cost to the user.

Finally, we did find the battery life to be pretty short for larger or heavier jobs. Therefore, this wouldn’t be a good option for professionals.

Overall, we did find the quality of the product to be of great value given the price. We think it’s a great option for the DIYer.

Specifications:

  • Rated Voltage: 20V MAX
  • Max Cutting Diameter: 3/4 in
  • Max Cutting Length: 22 in
  • Machine Weight: 5.5 lbs
  • Warranty: 3 years

Pros/Cons:

Pros:

  • Great value
  • Good warranty
  • Lightweight and easy to use
  • Ergonomic handle for optimal comfort

Cons:

  • Base model has battery sold separately
  • Battery runs less than an hour
  • Not good for professional use

BLACK+DECKER BEHT200 Hedge Trimmer (Best Budget)

The next product we reviewed on the list is the BLACK+DECKER BEHT200 Hedge Trimmer which represents the best budget option on our list.

Similar to the WORX WG 261.9, the BEHT200 has a rounded ergonomic handle that allows the user to hold the hedge trimmer from multiple angles and manipulate it with ease. The blades are also dual actions, cutting through material easily with little to no vibration. Related to the ergonomic features above, the handle features a full hand length trigger, which reduces “trigger finger” fatigue.

With a warranty of 2 years, this product also gives the user confidence it will last and speaks to the quality of manufacturing. Furthermore, Black & Decker is one of the most trusted brands on the market.

Due to the fact it’s a corded option and doesn’t hold a battery, the product comes in on the lighter side. If you are a smaller individual, this lightweight option won’t be a burden to use for longer periods of time.

However, the corded aspect of the product leads to most of the negative feedback we have about the product.

Firstly, the cord reduces versatility. Depending on the environment you’re in, you may need long power cords to allow you to use the product where you need it. Secondly, the product features a cord loop which claims to reduce cord slack, however, we found some purchasers complain about cord failure over time as a result. Finally, we did find some purchasers complain about cutting the cord by accident. We personally didn’t find this to be an issue, but can appreciate this might represent a risk to some, more novice users.

Overall, for the DIYer, the BLACK+DECKER BEHT200 Hedge Trimmer represents a great budget choice given its very competitive price.

Specifications:

  • AMPS: 3.5 Amps
  • Max Cutting Diameter: 5/8 in
  • Max Cutting Length: 18 in
  • Machine Weight: 4.5 lbs
  • Warranty: 2 years

Pros/Cons:

Pros:

  • Best budget choice
  • Decent warranty
  • Lightweight and easy to use
  • Ergonomic handle for optimal comfort
  • Corded trimmer, so no battery life problem
  • Full hand length trigger reduces “trigger finger” fatigue

Cons:

  • Corded trimmer means less versatility
  • 18 inch blade shorter than some other options on list
  • Looping power cord into the handle can cause cord failure over time
  • There is risk of cutting the power cord accidentally

DEWALT DCHT820B 20v Max Hedge Trimmer (Best Professional Pick)

Dewalt is a high quality, trusted manufacturer and using the DEWALT DCHT820B 20v Max Hedge Trimmer, it’s easy to see why.

The trimmer is a high quality product, with beautiful attention to detail. Similar to the other options on the list, it features an easy to hold ergonomic handle that just feels right. The DCHT820B is easy and fun to use. At 2800 strokes per minute, its razor sharp, hooked blades cut smoothly through any pesky hedge or bush. Aesthetically, the product is beautiful and gives anyone holding it confidence to tackle any job efficiently.

The product features a good warranty at 3 years. This product is built to last.

With a blade length of 22 in and a max cutting diameter of ¾ in, the DCHT820B will handle almost any job you throw at it.

However, like all products, the DCHT820B electric hedge trimmer does have a few drawbacks. Due to its quality, it represents a pricier option on the list.

Secondly, the product’s base model comes without a battery, which is sold separately. Given that most people will have a Dewalt product in their homes somewhere, you can easily use any interchangeable battery for all their products. If you don’t, this represents an additional outlay on an already pricier option.

Finally, the trigger finger is a standard one or two finger trigger, which can lead to finger fatigue.

Overall, we were really blown away by the craftsmanship of the product. It really is a thing of beauty. If you want to feel like a pro, this is the model for you.

Specifications:

  • Rated Voltage: 20V MAX
  • Max Cutting Diameter: 3/4 in
  • Max Cutting Length: 22 in
  • Machine Weight: 6.6 lbs
  • Warranty: 3 years

Pros/Cons:

Pros:

  • High quality
  • Good warranty
  • Easy to use
  • Ergonomic handle for optimal comfort
  • Good for professionals who want an electric option

Cons:

  • Base model has battery sold separately
  • Higher priced option
  • Single or dual finger trigger

BLACK+DECKER 40V MAX Lithium-Ion 22-Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmer (LHT2240)

The fourth product we reviewed on our quest to find the best electric hedge trimmer out there is the BLACK+DECKER 40V MAX Lithium-Ion 22-Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmer (LHT2240).

Similar to most products on the list, this electric hedge trimmer features a 22 in blade, which is our opinion, is just the right size allowing you to shape hard to reach places, while still giving the user control. It features a ¾ in cutting capacity which allows you to cut most hedges you come across.

At a rated battery voltage of 40V, this represents a more powerful tool on the list, all though we didn’t really notice too much of a difference in all honesty. Speaking more to the battery, it only takes 105 minutes to fully charge, which is a shorter charge time compared to some options on the list.

Like most of modern electric hedge trimmers, the BLACK+DECKER LHT2240 features an ergonomic handle for easy use and manoeuvrability. With a warranty of 2 years, this product is built to last.

Like the other Black+Decker hedge trimmer on the list, the handle features a full hand length trigger, which reduces “trigger finger” fatigue.

Finally, at 6.9 pounds, this does represent a heavier option on the list. The weight is a result of its durability however, so it’s not all negatives.

To conclude, this is a high-quality option that sits lower in the totem pole than the DEWALT DCHT820B, but you do get some savings making this is a good high quality secondary option.

Specifications:

  • Rated Voltage: 40V MAX
  • Max Cutting Diameter: 3/4 in
  • Max Cutting Length: 22 in
  • Machine Weight: 6.9 lbs
  • Warranty: 2 years

Pros/Cons:

Pros:

  • Higher quality product
  • Good warranty
  • Ergonomic handle for optimal comfort
  • Battery reaches full charge in 105 minutes

Cons:

  • Higher priced option
  • On the heavier side

Makita XHU02M1 Cordless Hedge Trimmer Kit

This final electric hedge trimmer we reviewed on the list is the Makita XHU02M1 Cordless Hedge Trimmer Kit.

This product is another pricier option is claims to be of higher quality. With a max cutting length of 22 in and a max cutting diameter of ¾ in, this is a product that will handle most jobs. Like other options on the list, the Makita XHU02M1 features an ergonomic handle for easy use and manipulation.

The battery reaches a full charge in 40 minutes, which was the fastest on our list; but that is partly due to being a lower Voltage battery. That’s where the positives end for us.

As mentioned above, the battery is lower voltage option, so there is some missing power. Like the Remington RM4020, this tool features a dual trigger system which requires two hands for use. Again, this is an intentional safety feature, but for more experienced users, it probably represents an encumbrance.

At 7.4 lbs, this represents the heaviest electric hedge trimmer on the list, which can lead to user fatigue. Finally, warranties can vary by distributor.

Overall, given the price, we think there are just not enough user friendly qualities or features to warrant the price. We’d probably pass on this one in all honesty.

Specifications:

  • Rated Voltage: 18V MAX
  • Max Cutting Diameter: 3/4 in
  • Max Cutting Length: 22 in
  • Machine Weight: 7.4 lbs
  • Warranty: varies by distributor

Pros/Cons:

Pros:

  • Higher quality product
  • Ergonomic handle for optimal comfort
  • Battery reaches full charge in 40 minutes

Cons:

  • Dual trigger system requires two hands for use, decreasing reach in some cases
  • Higher priced option
  • Heaviest option on the list
  • No standard warranty

FAQ’s

Below, we’ve listed some FAQ’s with answers to help give you a better idea of what to look for in an electric hedge trimmer. We hope it helps guide your decision making process in order to get the best tool for your job. As always, if you have any questions, please comment below s or email us directly. We love getting your feedback!

How long do electric hedge trimmers last?

Answer:

It is safe to say that your average cordless hedge trimmer will last for about 40 minutes to 1 hour based on a 20V battery. Obviously, this can vary by resistance of material, battery voltage but this is a general rule of thumb.

Most people only spend 20 minutes at a time trimming hedges so this is usually enough for most jobs. If you are a professional and spend long hours trimming away, gas or corded options are the better route.

How do electric hedge trimmers work?

Answer:

An electric-powered hedge trimmer works by using the electrical current provided by either a corded c connection or a battery, to power the motor, which provides the oscillations that the blades need. Electric motors are less powerful than gas, but also quieter.

What are better: corded or battery powered electric cord hedge trimmers?

Answer:

Corded electric hedge trimmers tend to be more powerful than their battery powered cousins. However, they also reduce versatility by having to stay close to an outlet or using a long extension cord which can be annoying to drag around.

Battery powered options have high versatility but obviously have battery length capacity which means you might have to stop more frequently or buy additional batteries to sub in and out.

Both electric options are quieter, lighter than their gas powered cousin, but have less power.

How thick of branches can electric hedge trimmers cut?

Answer:

Most 20V trimmers can cut branches up to ¾ in thick with ease. Some smaller voltage options may be a little bit less. As a general rule, ¾ in thick is desirable.

What’s a good length for the blade?

Answer:

Usually, 22 in seems to be the magic number to balance control with reach. We’re not really sure why 22 in seems to be the standard, but we can say it just feels right. Anything less than 22 in is on the shorter side, make sure to take this into consideration.

Are electric hedge trimmers easy to use?

Answer:

Electric hedge trimmers are usually a blast to use. We’re not going to lie, there is a fun factor to shaping your un-groomed “rogue” hedges. If you get the right power on your tool with good quality blades, your trimmer should cut through hedges like a knife through butter. Make sure to look out for hedge trimmers that require both hands to operate. All though this represents a safety feature, which may be desirable for novices, it may get in your way of reaching hard to get to places.

Conclusion

To conclude, we reviewed some great options on the list. Before making your decision, make sure to read the FAQ section with our answers to help guide your decision.

To summarize our picks for the best electric hedge trimmers in 2021, we found the WORX WG261.9 Cordless Hedge Trimmer to be the best value choice, the BLACK+DECKER BEHT200 Hedge Trimmer to be the best budget option and the DEWALT DCHT820B 20v Max Hedge Trimmer to be the best professional pick due to its high quality features.
